Making laundry soap with Dr. Bronner's

Earlier this year I made some laundry soap using Fels Naptha. You can read about it and link to the recipe here. The recipe worked great, but I thought the smell and look of it could be improved. :)

I just finished making my second batch substituting Dr. Bronner's bar castile soap in a lavender scent instead of the Fels Naptha. I like this version much better. I noticed no difference in the cleaning quality nor consistency, but it looks nicer (not a snot color!) and smells nicer. It was slightly sudsier in the making process, but didn't leave a residue in the washing cycle. I can't say I noticed a scent on the clothing when it was washed and dried, but I might experiment later with adding some lavender essential oil. For now, I just dab some on a washcloth and throw it in the dryer with the wet clothes.

I just wanted to provide an update for those of you who are in the process of cutting costs, chemicals, or both. I'll continue to update as I experiment with more variations.

Where did you buy that soap? I ordered 4 bars from VA Soaps & Scents to replace my Fels Naptha with. One bar makes 2 batches - and I always make for my mom when I make mine.

Heidi-

I don't know if Meijer is in your area, but I bought it there. Many health stores carry it and I used to purchase it online when I ordered vitamins. I only use 1/3 of a bar for a 2 gallon batch.

I love the VSS bar, too. The one time I tried it, the consistency turned out much thicker and more uniform. I have a bar that I bought at convention waiting for a future batch. I haven't done the cost breakdown, but the Dr. Bronner's fits in the budget a bit better.
